Signs You Need Periodontal Care

Periodontal (gum) disease is a bacterial infection that affects the tissues supporting your teeth — the gums, bone, and connective fibers. It starts as gingivitis, a mild inflammation of the gums, and can progress to periodontitis, where the infection destroys the bone and tissues that hold your teeth in place. According to the CDC, nearly half of adults over 30 have some form of periodontal disease, making it one of the most common yet preventable oral health conditions.

Gum disease is often called a "silent disease" because it can progress without pain in its early stages. By the time symptoms become noticeable, significant damage may have already occurred. Early detection and treatment by a periodontist can halt the progression of disease, preserve your natural teeth, and prevent the need for more extensive (and expensive) treatments later. Research also links periodontal disease to systemic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory problems.
